I actually did my taxes early this year! Yay! :D I definitely did better this year than last year when I owed the state around $40 or so because of a freelance thing I did that was never taxed. I used Turbotax last year, but I wanted to try something else this year. After reading through reviews, I stumbled on TaxACT, primarily because of the value it offered. I used the TaxACT 2008 Ultimate Bundle, which included both Federal and State with one free e-file, and it only cost me $19.95! It's definitely not as fancy or colorful as Turbotax, but I didn't have any problems with it. I definitely recommend it for the value :) if you're not into all the bells & whistles.
